Process Post 11

The last day of the lecture in this semester. Before the final presentation of my project which I’ve been working on for three months, we had a guest speaker in the lecture.

The guest speaker, Patrick Pennefather taught a lot of useful skills for the presentation.  One most notable things he mentioned was to know what I’m presenting well. I completely agreed with what he said. I usually get really nervous when I present in front of many people. Although I know that many students are not focusing on other presentations as they are also nervous about their presentation or thinking about the last minutes changes for their presentations, I still get very nervous and sometimes forget what I say. In addition, if I’m not 100% sure about what I present, my presentation would be very miserable. In PUB201, I know what I’m doing and what I’ve been working on as I’m writing what I’m passionate about, so I know what I present very well and very confident about what to say.

Later in class, the whole class moved to another room and did voice practice. It was very interesting to identify where the voice comes from and how to practice voice before presenting. It made me somewhat relaxing and be more confident about talking in front of many people.

I’ve learned a lot of things in PUB201 and hopefully I can do well on the final presentation without panicking and forgetting what I’m supposed to tell in class.

Rimowa Topas Review

As a travel enthusiast, a suitcase is a very important part of my travel. In this post, I’ll be reviewing Rimowa Topas, the suitcase I use. Here is the photo of my suitcase.

I bought this Rimowa suitcase in 2009, so I’ve been together with this for 8 years. I’ve traveled many places and you can see it has some damages on the surface of the suitcase. However, since it’s made of aluminum it’s easy to fix and I can use it for a long time. From what I heard from other people, it easily lasts for more than 10-15 years, although it’s treated badly at the airport.

I listed some pros and cons of this suitcase.

  • Strong and very durable
  • Brand value
  • Efficient space use

As it’s made of aluminum, Rimowa Topas is a very strong suitcase. The rectangle shape helps to pack clothes, shoes, and other important items for travel very efficiently. In addition, Rimowa is a famous brand that many airlines staffs know. So, even if it’s damaged, it’s easy to find a place to repair, and it comes with 5-year manufacturer warranty when you purchase.

  • Overpriced
  • It’s easy to get confused at baggage claim at an airport, as many people have Rimowa
  • Heavy

As it’s made of aluminum, not plastic, you can imagine it is very heavy (6kg for the one I have) comparing to other suitcase made of plastic. It’s a trade-off of the strength and durability, and it’s helpful when you put fragile items. Rimowa is very famous suitcase brand worldwide, so as you can imagine, a lot of people have Rimowa and you may see at least 10 Rimowa coming out of the buggade dispenser at the baggage claim at an airport. So, there is a risk that someone may take your suitcase at home and don’t notice until they try to open the locks. In addition, it cost almost $1,500 CAD for the aluminum model of Rimowa, and you may think it’s very overpriced for a suitcase. I think that’s fair to say it’s an overpriced item for travel.

Overall, Rimowa is a great suitcase to travel with. It has very cool design and strength. However, as I mentioned, it is very overpriced and it’s clear that people are paying for brand value. You may need to consider if it’s worse it or not in the long term. In my opinion, my purchase was worse it as I don’t have any problem with this suitcase for more than 8 years. It protects fragile items in my suitcase and I’ve never experienced that having damaged items in my suitcase after traveling.

Contents Creation (Video) Assignment

As my blog post shows, I take a lot of photos when I travel, however, I haven’t take many videos as i don’t have a great video taking skill. However, I still try to take videos at least when airplanes are taking off and landing to the airport. So, the time an airplane leaves a runway and arrives on a runway. When I was thinking about the name of my blog, one of the reasons I decided to go with “Contrail and Runways” is that airplanes are not always flying, they need time to spend on the ground and something to connect them between the ground and sky is runways. Between two runways, the contrail can connect those two points in the world, and make one flight. So, the runways are the points where airplanes lave to the sky and comes back to the ground, contrail is the line which connects those two points.

So, I combined two of my videos. As it is obvious from the video quality, I don’t have great video taking or editing skill. However, you can still hear the powerful sound of engines and I hope that what attracts aviation enthusiasts. Here is the link to the video.

I hope this video can present the idea that the reason why I included the word “runways” in my blog title and explains how meaningful those are,

Process Post 10

In week 10 of class, it’s very close to the end of the semester.

In the tutorial, I tested my websites’ mobile friendliness by using mobiletest. It seems like on some devices, my website is displayed weirdly on certain devices, like on the iPad mini.  I’ve been trying to make my website as mobile friendly and easy to read as possible, however sometimes the placement of photos and texts may seem awkward or not mobile-friendly. Since, my blog mainly talks about airplanes, airports, airlines, and travel, the visual images are very important and deliver the contents in an appropriate way is necessary to keep my audience entertained and attracting.

It is sometimes hard to put a lot of photos and texts in one post as it may break the balance within my website. I have been trying to make every post be the similar length and help the audience to keep the same reading speed. In case a post may go over my average length, I also consider about breaking the posts into multiple blog posts. I used this method for my 3 Nights 8 Days travel series. This travel series was very long series as I had to expand it up to part 7. I believe that by using this method to breaking one travel review into several posts, the audience can feel like they’re traveling with me and feel the excitement of what will happen the next.

Optimizing contents for the target audience is significant to increase the user friendliness of my website and make the audience want to return my website to discover more of my contents.

Where to Travel?

In this post, I will explain how I decide where to travel.

I have very specific criteria for planning the destination and the duration of the trip.

I usually decide destinations first. Destinations I pick are usually,

  • Places have public transportation
  • Or affordable taxi/Uber available
  • Big cities

The first 2 criteria are simply because I don’t have a drivers license and even if I had, I’m too scared to drive oversea. I like New York and Singapore so much, and one of the reasons is that I can go pretty much anywhere by taking public transit.

In addition, I love big cities where there are a lot of people and be the centre of culture. I like seeing big buildings and beautiful night view. Big cities also tend to have landmark places to visit within walking distances and I like all of those factors to form big cities.

Duration is very important to decide where to travel. If I’m going to Europe, I prefer to go longer than a week. If I only have few days, I prefer to go somewhere within the North America, such as Seattle or New York. Another important factor is the convenience of flights/transportations to get the destination. If the flight to the destination is not flying every single day, it’s hard to make a travel vacation plan. In the case of 3 Nights 8 Days Trip, I had one week break in school and I planned to visit as many places as possible in a week. In addition, I had never been to Abu Dhabi and Singapore, so I definitely wanted to travel to those destinations.

Duration is quite significant to consider where I can travel and how long I have to each destination. So, I’ve experienced 3 Nights 8 Days Trip and also A Weekend in New York.

“Why I travel?” is the most important question I usually ask to myself. I love New York and I always get a lot of inspiration by walking in Manhattan. There are a lot of arts, amusements, shops, restaurants, and places I love to visit and all of these give me the great impression of New York.  Right now, my dream place to visit is Europe, especially London and Paris. The reason is that I’ve never traveled in Europe and it’s completely new world for me. I heard from a lot of friends that the North America and Europe are very different and I should visit as many cities as possible in Europe if I have opportunities.  So, discovering the new world is my primary purpose of my travel in recent days.

Destination, duration, and purpose, all of these sound very basic factor in deciding where to travel and it’s good to consider why you want to travel to the destination before making a plan. You may find better place to travel to by discovering your own criteria for travel plan making.
